Taking Better Fish Pictures

The most common kind of fish picture you see is a proud angler standing in a vertically-oriented shot holding a fish hanging vertically in front of him or her. The camera is usually held at the same level as the angler's head. Not exactly exciting. The next most common kind shows the angler holding the fish horizontally out in front of him or her, again with the camera held at standing eye level. A little better, but still not very interesting.

To take a better fish picture, get some "angles" into it. At the very least have the subject hold the fish diagonally with the head up or down. Also, try varying the angle from which you take the shot by kneeling down or shooting from somewhere above the subject. The very best fish pictures have "depth" to them. To achieve this, have the subject hold the fish not at right angles to the camera, but pointing somewhat toward it to make the picture appear more three-dimensional.
