Do the (Un)Twist

by Zack Thomas, originally published in Sea, copyright 2006 by Zack Thomas

When trolled lures or baits become fouled, they often start to "spin." If you don't catch the problem right away, your line can become twisted. Twisted line loses some of its strength, and it's also very hard to manage.

Instead of simply cutting off the twisted part of the line, try this simple trick for untwisting it: Cut off the lure or hook and all leaders and terminal tackle. Then let out the twisted portion of the line behind the boat and drag it for a few minutes while trolling or running. With nothing on the end, the line will gradually untwist itself.

As you reel the bare line back in, let it run through your fingertips and feel for any sharp kinks that may have been created by the twisting. If you feel one, cut the line there and discard the remainder. If not, you're ready to go.
