Fish -n- Map's Baja charts are extremely useful for small-boat anglers. Although they're not suited for plotting, they're plenty good for "eyeball" navigation — and you're not going to be plotting courses with chart and compass in a 20-something-foot open boat anyway.

The charts each include several blow-ups and pack in a remarkable amount of information. And that's the best thing about these charts — they're just a great value. For $7.95, you get a quarter of Baja's coastline.

The government paper charts cost $20+ apiece, cover smaller areas, and are a pain in the ass to use on a small open boat. The Baja Directions charts are prettier, but they cover very small areas — there are 16 Baja titles — and sell for $11.95.

The one thing these charts lack — with the exception of the Pacific North chart — is GPS numbers for banks, highspots, etc. They're shown on the charts, so you can approximate their location, but you can't just punch in the numbers.

Each chart measures 36" x 24" and, again, that space is used very efficiently. Contour intervals vary from as little as 10 feet on some blow-ups to 150 feet or more on the "main" charts. The where-to-fish information doesn't include any burning secrets, but it's quite accurate.

The Cortez North chart covers the Baja coast from San Felipe to Punta Pulpito, between Mulege and Loreto and the mainland coast from north of Puerto Penasco to south of Guaymas. Blow-ups include the Islas Encantadas, Bahia de Los Angeles, Puerto Refugio on Angel de la Guarda, Bahia San Francisquito, Guaymas and San Carlos, and the Santa Rosalia to Punta Pulpito stretch, including Punta Chivato and Isla San Marcos.

The Cortez South chart covers Baja from Punta Pulpito to Cabo and the Pacific nearly to Mag Bay, including the Golden Gate and Finger Banks. Blow-ups include Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo, Bahia de La Paz, Espritiu Santo, and the Loreto area from Pulpito down to Agua Verde, including Coronado, Carmen, Danzante, Monserrate and a little corner of Catalan.

The Pacific North chart covers from the border down to about Guerrero Negro, with blow-ups of the Coronados; Ensenada, Punta Banda and the Islas de Todos Santos; San Quintin Bay; Guadalupe Island; and the Islas San Benitos. It also shows the albacore banks south of San Diego quite well — the 302, the 390, the Airplane, the 213, the 1010 Trench, the Double 220s, the 295, the 238, etc. GPS NUMBERS ARE INCUDED FOR offshore banks as well as inshore highspots like those off San Quintin.

The Pacific South chart covers from Punta Eugenia to about 30 miles down the coast from the southern extent of Mag Bay. Blow-ups include Bahia de Tortugas; La Bocana, Punta Abreojos, Estero de Coyote and Laguna San Ignacio; Mag Bay and Bahia Almejas; and the northern panhandle of Mag Bay.
