yo-yo iron colors, left tor right: green-yellow, blue-white, scrambled
egg. |
| The
archetypal "yo-yo irons," Salas Lures' 6X and 6X Jr. metal jigs
are incredibly versatile lures. Drop
them to the bottom and grind them vertically back to the surface as
fast as you can for yellowtail anywhere in the Cortez. Do the same
around the outer edges of Pacific kelp beds, but expect to pick up a
white seabass here and there too. Drop
them straight down beneath offshore kelp paddies for yellowtail and
tuna holding deep. Bounce
them along over reefs and broken bottoms on the Pacific side for sand
bass, calico bass, halibut, whitefish and anything else that happens
by. Work them over the rockpiles off Ensenada and San Quintin for big
rockfish and lingcod and over the deep reefs of the Cortez for
huachinango, cabrilla and big groupers. These things come in a lot more colors than we carry, and all of them probably work just fine. But for our money, the old standbys of blue-white, scrambled egg and green-yellow are all you really need. We start with scrambled egg for Cortez 'tails and Pacific inshore fishing and with blue-white for Pacific 'tails and white seabass. Green-yellow is a secondary choice that sometimes seems to be noticeably better than the other two--especially, in our experience, on the offshore paddies. The 6X is 6" long and weighs 6 oz. It gets to the bottom in deep water, strong currents, and/or a fast drift a lot better than the Jr. The bigger profile seems to be more appealing to yellowtail, white seabass, big bottom fish and the larger grouper types. The 6X Jr. is 4-1/2" long and weighs 4 oz. It seems more palatable to sand bass, calicos, halibut, cabrilla, snapper, etc. It also seems to work better on offshore paddies. And sometimes, the 'tails show a marked preference for a smaller lure. |
