PLEASE READ BEFORE SHOPPING

As you can probably tell by all the stuff that's out of stock, we've decided to gradually call it quits. Between the recession at home and the obsessive coverage of drug-related violence along the border, Baja tourism has nose-dived.

That, combined with a new baby last year, left me with no choice but to break down and get a full-time job. Unfortunately, it's tough to keep this site going and work a full-time job and serve part-time as executive director of the Outdoor Writers Association of California. One of them had to go.

We aren't slamming the virtual doors, though. We'll start discounting items a few at a time to sell off stock. The simple fact is that it takes enough time to change prices that we can't drop them all overnight. So please check back often.

PLEASE NOTE that although we'll do our best to tell you when an item is sold out or there are only a few left, we may fall behind. If one of the items you order is out of stock, we'll refund your money for it and still send the rest of your order.

Thanks to all of you who have supported us. Hope to see you down south sometime. --ZT

Welcome to TranspeninsularOutfitters.com, a Baja-specific online tackle shop.

What you'll find here is a very small, very smart selection of Baja-specific tackle and gear hand-chosen by the author of The Angler's Guide to Trailer-Boating Baja.

This is the stuff you really need—proven lures in proven colors and versatile, practical gear. If you don't need it to fish Baja, we won't sell it.

Why buy from us? First, if you don't live in Southern California, it's tough to get your hands on a lot of this stuff. The big-box catalogs have some of it, but not much. The SoCal tackle shops have most of it, but stopping by one on your way south, especially towing a trailer, is a hassle—and that's assuming you find everything you need on your first stop.

Second, we carry niche Baja tackle most of them don't—Baja Catch-style Yamashita hoochies, MirrOlures, Rebel Fastracs, and more.

Third, we'll not only save you stopping at a tackle shop, we'll match or beat tackle shop prices. Plus, unless you happen to live in Arkansas, you don't pay sales tax (7.75% in San Diego these days), and we have a strict no-gouge shipping policy.

Fourth, you don't have to stand there feeling stupid in front of a wall of 300 different jigs wondering which three you actually need. And you don't have to pore over a size chart in a catalog trying to guess what size double trolling hook you need for a Zuker's feather, either; we carry the right size and none of the wrong ones.

And finally, you'll be helping finance the next edition of The Angler's Guide.

By the way, you may notice that we're now based in beautiful Fort Smith, Arkansas—a funny place for a Baja tackle shop. The nose-dive in Baja tourism resulting from very, very thorough coverage of Baja crime by the U.S. media, the tough U.S. economy, and the swine-flu scare, combined with a tight job market (especially for magazine editors), left us with little choice but to move here for a job. We're not raising shipping rates, though, and we're certainly not any less passionate about Baja. --ZT
