Short metal leaders are more or less mandatory when trolling for sierra. We don't use them for many other applications, although in The Baja Catch, Kelly and Kira recommend them for essentially all Baja inshore trolling. A few inches of wire definitely reduces the number of lures (and fish) you'll lose as the result of bite-offs and of reef-fish diving into rocky holes.

The 8-inch, 27-lb. braided "Invisa-Leaders" work well with 15- to 25-lb. tackle, which means they're useful primarily for sierra and light inshore trolling with Rebels and Rapalas. They're uncoated and have a dull, low-vis bronze finish, and they're relatively thin and flexible. There's a black ball-bearing swivel on one end and a black Coastlock snap on the other. The snap and the swivel are attached with low-profile twists rather than crimps.

For heavier duty -- dragging MirrOlures over the Abreojos reefs, say, or around Cerralvo when the pargo are spawning -- the 18-inch, 45-lb. leaders are obviously more appropriate. These are nylon-coated and finished with a black interlock snap and a black barrel swivel, both crimped to the leader.
